Apple’s Wireless Headphones (Apple AirPods 3) have evolved from the first generation with water resistance, better Siri integration, and a wireless charging case. And if that wasn’t enough, they’re now faster to pair and tap into Siri in an instant.

The AirPods 3 have the same ear tip design as the AirPods 2, with a slightly larger body than the regular AirPods but smaller than the AirPods Pro. The stems are also shorter, measuring roughly 25mm from end to end. However, there are a few differences between AirPod generations (more on these in Features below).

With an overall design similar to previous models, it can be hard to tell which model you’re looking at. The easiest way is to look at the case: If it’s short and squatty like your iPhone charger or has a trapezoidal shape with a glossy white finish, then it’s either an original pair of AirPods or an updated set of AirPods 2.

Apple AirPods 3 Pro & Cons

They’re extremely lightweight. When you’re walking around with them in, you won’t feel weighed down or as if your ears are being strained like they would be if you had headphones on. Active noise cancellation. As much as we’d like to have it, there’s no active noise cancellation to be found on AirPods 3.
The sound quality is excellent. In addition to delivering clear and crisp audio, the bass is good without overpowering the mids and highs. aptX support. You also won’t find support for the higher-quality aptX Bluetooth codec.
Battery life is excellent. Even when using the noise cancelling feature, they’ll last through a long day of work or play. IP rating. Waterproofing or dust resistance isn’t present either; you’ll be in trouble if the rain or sweat gets splashed onto them, as they don’t have an IP rating of any kind (IP ratings are a standard measure used by manufacturers to rate their devices’ waterproof capabilities).
The case charges quickly and holds multiple charges so that you can charge them on-the-go if needed (and top off the case itself at night). Wireless charging case. The case isn’t even wireless charging compatible, so if you want to use a Qi wireless charger with these earbuds, you’re out of luck (check out the PowerWave Stand from Anker for wireless charging options).
They pair easily with Apple devices and are easy to use once paired up. Equalizer. Apple doesn’t include an equalizer with AirPods 3 either, so if you want more control over your audio experience, that’s not available here yet – though we hope it will be in a future version of the AirPods software update.
They have a premium feel that’s backed up by their sturdy construction—they’re not flimsy at all despite their size and weight.
In addition to being water-resistant, these buds are sweat-resistant (although it’s not recommended that you wear them for exercise; see “Cons” for more details about this).
Their small size makes them very portable; there’s no cord to get wrapped around other objects in your bag, which can be an annoyance with wired earbuds/headphones.

We should also note that the new AirPods Pro has changed the control system. Rather than tapping on the earbuds, you squeeze them to access Siri or pause audio. You can choose between touch and squeeze in Settings > Bluetooth > Control Type. You can also press play or pause by putting one of your AirPods in your ear, pulling it out, and pressing once on its backside.

The new controls are convenient for those who use their personal assistant a lot, but they do take some getting used to because each squeeze is a different command:

  • Squeeze once! Play/pause media and answer/hang up calls
  • Squeeze twice! Skip forward
  • Squeeze thrice! Skip backward

Do you know what the H1 chip does and why it’s important? The H1 chip is a specialized chip for headphones that provides faster, more reliable wireless connectivity, hands-free Siri access, better battery life and more.

You can activate Siri by saying, “Hey, Siri.” Apple says that this will be available on AirPods 3. The current AirPods 2 and AirPods Pro require you to tap an AirPod to activate the voice assistant.

This feature allows your AirPods to automatically pause audio when one of them is removed from your ear. This feature has been available on both previous generations of AirPods, so we expect it will continue in the next generation.

If you lose a pair of AirPods, Find My can locate them for you – as long as their battery isn’t dead. You can configure notifications to alert you if your AirPods are out of range from any of your devices for an extended period. Both these features are available on all current-generation AirPods models, so we expect they’ll return in the next generation of devices too.

You might think that because Android doesn’t use iOS, it’ll be impossible to get Apple’s truly wireless earbuds working with most smartphone platforms on the planet.

If you’ve got a phone that runs an older version, unfortunately, there’s no luck here: stick with another brand like Samsung or Sony instead if you want a set that’ll work seamlessly across platforms.

Apple may not be famed for its support for cross-platform compatibility beyond its products, but it does make macOS compatible with Windows laptops.

Sound Quality

Apple has always had a knack for audio quality, which does not change with the AirPods 3. The earbuds are equipped with custom Apple drivers that deliver fantastic sound quality.

The bass is not overpowering, but it certainly gets your attention without sacrificing the rest of the frequency range. The highs are crisp and defined, while the mids are pronounced and detailed. There is also minimal distortion even at higher volume levels which can be a common occurrence in earbuds of this price range.

Latency is another area where Apple takes their tech seriously, and they don’t disappoint with the AirPods 3 here either. There is very low latency (60ms) even when using them to watch videos on your phone or computer while listening to them wirelessly through Bluetooth.

Of course, this may vary from device to device, so keep that in mind if you plan on using these for gaming or other high-latency activities like watching videos online or movies, thanks to Apple’s new H1 chip technology as well!

One thing we noticed about these buds was how seamless their active noise cancelling, and transparency modes worked together.

Apple (and many other companies) have had a hard time perfecting the performance of their AirPods cases and earbuds. But Apple has finally found the sweet spot: an almost perfect mixture of latency, battery life, microphone and sound quality, noise cancelling and more.

It starts with the charging case—a sleek white pill charged by a lightning cable. After you’ve charged it up, you can use it to set your AirPods 3 as often as you need before recharging the case itself. The case will also tell you whether your AirPods are connected to your device or not.

You’ll also notice less latency when playing games or watching videos on your smartphone—something that was a big problem for previous generations of AirPods.

Microphone, Call quality, and Transparency mode

  • Call quality. We found that the AirPods 3 produce a pretty good sound on calls, with a strong balance of mids, highs and lows. That’s true even in windy conditions, which usually makes it harder for microphones to pick up your voice. However, you can switch on Transparency Mode via the Control Center or by using the volume controls on either earbud if you want your callers to be able to hear more of the noise around you, such as when you’re at a restaurant trying to figure out where your friends are sitting.
  • The microphone quality is fine, but if you experience problems with it being overly sensitive or unable to hear you well (or too loud), you can set the microphone sensitivity level under Settings > Bluetooth > AirPods Pro.

Battery Life

With the AirPods 3, you’ll be able to enjoy up to 20 hours of battery life—that’s the same as the original models and more than you’ll get from the AirPods Pro. Apple has managed this with a new H1 chip that is more efficient, allowing for longer battery life overall. The charging case also gets a bit of an upgrade, allowing for faster charging and improved efficiency. Overall, this is a big improvement over the five hours of battery life supported by the AirPods 2.

The AirPods Pro are one of the best true wireless earbuds available. They have good sound quality with deep bass and good mid-range, but they lack a bit of treble. Their noise cancelling is also perfect, and they are comfortable to wear for long listening sessions.

However, their battery life is relatively short, so you may need to bring their case more often if you’re out during the day. They support only SBC at low latency over Bluetooth 5.0, so you won’t be able to pair them with older devices that don’t support this codec or newer devices that don’t implement it well.

They also have a somewhat limited range as they can quickly lose connection when moving around within 10 meters of your device. The case’s lid is also not magnetic, which makes it harder to open than other similar cases on the market.

On the upside, these headphones have excellent microphone quality for calls and can be used wirelessly in mono mode if you want to keep an ear on your surroundings on busy commutes or when running outdoors.

Overall, suppose you want excellent noise-cancelling performance in a discreet package with decent audio reproduction and excellent microphone quality for calls or meetings online. In that case, the AirPods Pro are worth considering despite minor flaws and limitations in their wireless range and codec support.

Should I get them? Definitely! Suppose you’re looking for good ANC headphones that aren’t too bulky but offer a comfortable design without sacrificing sound quality or features like wireless charging or Alexa integration.

Apple AirPods 3 FAQ

  • What are the differences between AirPods Pro and AirPods 3?*

The biggest difference is size. The AirPods 3 is smaller than the Pro, but that’s because it’s missing a feature: noise cancelation. While the Pro comes with this feature (more on that below), Apple doesn’t offer it on its standard earbuds.

The other differences are price (the regular AirPods cost less) and color. The standard model comes in white, while the Pro comes in white and black. Apple AirPods 3 Price in Nigeria.
