Nokia 9 PureView and its stunning camera department have just made their debut on the Indian market. Despite not catalyzing much attention, this is definitely among the most impressive camera phones of 2019 and it is even the first device on its back with a Penta camera setup. Although it’s a perfect phone for photography-addicted people, it’s also an affordable flagship and, since it made its debut in the huge Indian peninsula, we think it’s time to compare it with other competitive 2019 flagships. Because of their great camera capabilities and their pretty affordable price tags compared with other flagships we chose the Honor 20 Pro and OnePlus 7.

Nokia 9 PureView does not concentrate on design and feel, although it boasts an impressive build quality. It has a very elegant glass back but it has too many holes and thick bezels around the display as well. OnePlus 7 is only a minor update of the OnePlus 6T, and is almost similar when it comes to usability, but in this case, nothing too thrilling. Honor 20 Pro, which has a punch-hole display and very slim bezels, is the real interesting one. Even the most lightweight, it fits very well in a pocket and is easier to use with one hand. But remember that Nokia 9 PureView is the only water-resistant phone thanks to the IP67 certification (not the highest water-resistance rating, but it can withstand temporary immersions for 30 minutes up to 1 meter deep).
While Nokia 9 PureView doesn’t have exactly the best design, it certainly comes with the best display. Despite being an 18:9 panel, it boasts a higher resolution than its rivals (Quad HD+ with 1440 x 2880 pixels) and is even compliant to HDR10 so it has an incredible color reproduction. Now it is up to you to decide whether or not it would be worth getting thicker bezels for a better display. The silver medal goes to the OnePlus 7 which still comes with an OLED display much like the Nokia 9 PureView, but has a lower resolution and is not compatible with HDR. Honor 20 Pro has an IPS panel of the midrange class which is its weakest point if we compare it to other flagships.
OnePlus 7 simply wins the hardware comparison because it is fitted with a stronger processor. We are talking about Qualcomm running the Snapdragon 855 at a frequency higher than 2.84 GHz and including a better GPU. Right afterwards, there’s Honor 20 Pro which is fitted with a Kirin 980 and 8 GB RAM, while the last position goes to the Nokia 9 PureView and its old-gen Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with only 6 GB RAM. But Nokia 9 PureView is still quite fast as it is part of the Android One program and is constantly updated.
My favorite for the camera department is the Nokia 9 PureView due to its Penta camera which includes 2 RGB sensors and 3 monochromatic sensors. All the sensors can function simultaneously, capturing an impressive amount of light and advanced depth information. Thanks to this device, you can take professional shots that can be edited in an advanced manner. If we are talking about picture quality, Honor 20 Pro with its 48 MP, the brightest focal aperture ever seen on a mobile phone (f/1.4), a dedicated macro camera and even a better selfie camera than Nokia 9 PureView, is more or less at the same level.
Because it packs a much bigger battery than both OnePlus 7 and Nokia 9 PureView, and a smaller display, Honor 20 Pro wins the comparison of battery life. There’s OnePlus 7 right after, while Nokia 9 PureView just has an average battery.
If Nokia 9 PureView and Honor 20 Pro bear a starting price tag of €600/$675 (it varies according to the market), OnePlus 7 starts at €550/$620. If I had to choose the best device for most consumers, because of its better design, bigger battery and impressive cameras, I would go for the Honor 20 Pro.
